William Whittington, son of Littleton Whittington and Frances Glenn a direct descendant of Richard Whittington of London, England was born in Shelby Co KY 17 Nov 1825 and grew to young manhood there. When a young man he was apprenticed to the cabinet makers' trade and became a skilful workman in veneer woodwork. He left Kentucky in 1842 coming to Indiana to make his home. He rode through on horseback and landed in Montgomery County with his horse and 75 cents in his pocket. Then he started to make a home in the forest, entering apiece of ground near Freedom Church. He was married to Rebecca Jane Davis who died six year ago, daughter of the Rev. Reese Davis on eof the pioneer Baptist preachers of this section. They lived n the farm and raised a large family of children. Those who grew to manhood (sic) are: RL Whittington, Bedford, Iowa; James T. Whittington, Emporia, Ks; Mrs. Elizabeth F. Canine, Oxford, Indiana; Mrs. Abbie E. Deere, Indianapolis; Mrs. Mamie Munns, deceased; WT Whittington, deceased; John D. Whittington, deceased; Charles E. Whittington and Walter A. Whittington of this city. Three children died in infancy. Two brothers have preceded him: Tyre G. at the age of 91; Thomas C. at the age of 85 and one surviving brother, Joshua L. of Cayuga, Indiana aged 85. The longevity of life of these four brothers and their close resemblance to each other was remarkable. Some years ago, he retired from the farm and came to Crawfordsville to live, spending the remainder of his days in this city. He was a quiet, unassuming man of medium build with a constitution of iron which with his clean regular habits had much to do with his long and useful life. He remarked to his family and friends more than 40 years ago that he would live to see horseless carriages and flying machines. He leaves as a posterity, six children, 19 grandchildren and 14 greats. Out of this posterity there is but one living boy who can perpetuate his name, Richard Armantrout Whittington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Whittington now 9. He early associated himself as a member of the Freedom Baptist Church and has held a continuous membership there to this time. Some weeks ago he expressed a desire that he might live to reach his 90th birthday which he did dying uupon his natal day, Nov. 17. Funeral services will be held from the home at 10 Friday morning conducted by BE Antrobus of the First Baptist Church. Interment will be made in the beautiful country cemetery at Freedom, the party going down by auto.
